What We're Not Seeing

While the TV news is showing us pictures of dripping wet reporters in New Orleans, and endless loops of satellite tracking footage of Gustav, alternating with empty seats at the GOP convention while W and McCain act presidential (this time), there is a chilling and very important story going seriously uncovered.

In Minnesota, armed police in riot gear, working in coordination with the FBI, are acting like storm troopers, busting down doors, roughing up peaceful citizens in homes without search warrants.

Today, they started hauling away journalists, charging them with conspiracy to riot.

I only wish I were joking.

This is exactly the sort of thing the Chinese government did before the Olympics. Brutally suppressing dissent, and using armed men to forcibly detain those the government worried might be an embarrassment. Only we claim to be a democracy, with respect for the rule of law, not some totalitarian Communist regime.

Given the fact that the President, Vice-President and candidates aren't even AT the convention, these tactics are even more an over-reach. It can't even be claimed that they are protecting their security.
