Parallel Lives

The year: 1984.

In America, an election year, with candidates active both East and West. Important races being run to choose the people who would represent the American people.

On the East Coast, Joe Biden is successfully running for re-election to the United States Senate, but loses out in his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

On the West Coast, Sarah Palin is successfully running for Miss Wasilla, but loses out in her campaign for Miss Alaska.

The year: 1993.
In Europe, Joe Biden calls Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic a war criminal, to his face.

In Alaska, University of Idaho graduate Sarah Palin is a member of the Wasilla city council.

In Chicago, Harvard Law School graduate Barack Obama is teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago, and joins a law firm specializing in civil rights litigation and neighborhood economic development.

The year: 1998
In Washington, DC, Joe Biden is serving on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and as ranking minority member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

In Alaska, Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin is fighting a law suit claiming she illegally fired the police chief for political reasons. (The lawsuit is later dismissed when the judge rules she had the authority to fire the chief for whatever reason she wanted.)

In Illinois, State Senator Barack Obama is re-elected to his seat in the Illinois Senate. His vote total is more than five times the entire population of Wasilla, Alaska.

The year: 2006
In Washington, DC, United States Senator Barack Obama, having been elected with a total of 3,597,456 votes two years earlier, is introducing bills to limit nuclear proliferation and help struggling nations in Africa.

In Alaska, Sarah Palin is elected with a total of 114,697 votes to replace the scandal-plagued Governor Murkowski, becoming the youngest governor in the history of Alaska, and the first born since it became a state.

It is often said that the 'first Presidential decision' is a candidate's choice of running mate.

Barack Obama selected one of the most qualified people available for the job of vice-president; John McCain picked one of the least qualified. Who really puts country ahead of politics?
