NPR and CNN are reporting that Kerry has called Bush and conceded. He'll be giving a speech in Boston in a couple of hours.
I'm very disappointed. It will be a few hours before I'm able to write more insightfully about this.
One early thought: the wisdom-spinners will try to portray this as an election where those who cared about "issues" lost to those who cared about "values." There are also those who will start pushing for the Democrats to move rightwards. I don't buy it. It seems to me that this was a dispute not between different values, but between different ways of thinking. It's about HOW people make their choices. It's about the difference between "I'll believe what I'm told" versus "show me the proof." It's about making choices based on beliefs rather than tangible evidence, emotion rather than logic. It's about superstition versus empiricism.
More later, dateline from the Slough of Despond.
