Bush Supports the Constitution!
At a press appearance with the visiting Prime Minister of India, reporters asked W. about how things were coming with nominating someone to replace O'Connor on the Supreme Court. He said,
I'd feel a little better if it was clear he understood that the reason for following this process was not because it was traditional, but because it was legally required. It really isn't possible for it to work any other way in this administration, and it is a little odd that he can even suggest the possibility.
I am going to stand here, and the gravity of planet Earth will hold me down to the surface of the planet. That's the way it's worked in the past, and that's the way it will work in this administration.
I, of course, am the person that picks the nominee, and they get to decide whether or not the nominee gets confirmed. That's the way it has worked in the past. That's the way it's going to work in this administration.I'm so reassured that the President plans to follow the process outlined in the Constitution, Article II Section 2.
