In Baghdad:
On Sunday evening, insurgents struck a crowded Sadr City market, using mortars, car bombs and at least one suicide bomber. Fifty-eight people were killed and nearly 300 wounded, according to the Health Ministry.
Mr. Sadr's followers said it could have been worse. An hour later, militia members nabbed two men in a pickup truck with mortar tubes in the back, said Sabbah Abu Anwar, a commander in Mr. Sadr's militia.
Mr. Anwar said the men were questioned and beaten and eventually confessed to planning attacks.
At nearly the same time, two men wearing puffy clothing tried to push their way into a crowded Sadr City hospital. Radi Ali Taresh, a hospital guard, said militia members pounced on them and discovered that the men were strapped with explosives.
Militia members marched the four suspects to a quiet street around 1 a.m. and hanged them with rope, Mr. Anwar said. "We needed to show the people that we're doing something for them," he said.
