Big and Small
The incompetence of this administration comes in all sizes.
Apparently, for all his fine words about personal responsibility, Mr. Bush not only failed to pay attention to his own request for an absentee ballot, he couldn't get a staff that was capable of paying attention for him. As a result, the taxpayers get to pay for an Air Force One flight to Texas, and all the security involved in a presidential trip.
Perhaps it just slipped through the cracks what with all the work that's gone into the very, very critical line-item veto proposal. That's so important in an era of one-party government, and without a doubt the most important thing to be fixed in the country right now.
Apparently, someone on the staff still has the brain cells to realize that they would need to cobble together a trip to New Orleans on the way home as a fig leaf, and provide some supposed excuse for spending our tax dollars. (They must be pretty hard up that they have to fly there to cover for their screw-ups. I bet there are quite a few displaced people who would have liked to have a special jet fly them back to New Orleans so that they could vote, come think of it. Nice move.)
Don't hold your breath waiting for a reimbursment from W's personal funds.

Mr. Bush hasn't missed a GOP contest since he started voting in Crawford in March 2002. An administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, indicated Saturday that White House staff had slipped up on the paperwork for requesting a mail-in ballot this time. It's bad enough that he was too much of a dolt to get the mail-in ballot, but then he thinks it's legitimate to just fly down there on our dime to cover for his mistake. Suck it up, George! Just live with the consequences of your mistake, and miss out on the opportunity to vote for Andy Card's mom. (If it mattered to Andy, why didn't HE make sure the ballot was applied for?) Set an example for the millions of American voters who don't have 747's at their beck-and-call.
Texas also allows a generous period for early in-person voting. But that option expired Friday while Mr. Bush was in India and Pakistan.
Early Saturday, with the president at risk of missing the election – including a nomination fight for the local congressional seat – the White House announced he would fly to Crawford after a meeting with the Russian foreign minister at the White House. He'll arrive at the polls at the Crawford Fire Station before the 7 p.m. closing.
