OK, George, time to step up.
Let's go, Mr. "Beacon of Freedom". Your own Secretary of State has finally testified before Congress that the situation in Sudan is genocide. What more is it going to take?
Where are the bombastic speeches? Where is the full-court press to line up national and world opinion? Why haven't we heard about this over and over, in speeches to the nation? Why aren't we hearing Rice and Rumsfeld and the whole gang on every news program, all repeating the talking points about "killing their own people" and "rape and brutal atrocities?" Where is the multi-media presentation to the Security Council? What about the threats and deadlines? Where are the diversions of military resources from our ongoing activities in preparation for the new one?
The crisis in Dafur is not exactly new. The Congress passed a resolution calling it genocide back in July. It's estimated that 1.4 MILLION people have been chased out of their homes. Villages have been burned. Uncounted thousands have been murdered by the government of Sudan, through its Janjaweed proxies. It's been so bad for so long that multiple world leaders and even Congressmembers have had time to go look for themselves. George, Sudan was even the home of Al Qaeda before they moved to Afghanistan! If your team can't spin that into an excuse for taking action on this, no one can.
You are making speeches multiple times a day. Your words are carried on every news broadcast. Have you even mentioned Sudan since April? Have you stumbled over the word Janjaweed? Is there even an ounce of concern being expressed by you and your campaign?
Two dozen experts hired by the State Department "spent a month interviewing refugees and confirming widespread atrocities, and their report, which includes 1,200 interviews," sat on Colin Powell's desk. A thousand American soldiers dead, over weapons that weren't there in the first place. But you can't even crank up even one speech about this brutal situation? Is that how to represent a shining beacon of liberty and freedom to the oppressed people of the world? Really?
What's stopping you?
